The hat, as its name suggests, is a head covering used to provide shade, commonly worn by travelers, pilgrims, laborers, and merchants. The word *sombrero* was already in use in 12th-century Castile and was known in Aragon as *Capell de Sol* during the 13th and 14th centuries. This particular model was worn by both men and women, either with the point forward or backward, and almost always combined with a linen cap or coif.
