Cavalry in general has always preferred to have their face covered for obvious reasons, as sometimes it is worth sacrificing vision for protection. It could be said that even centuries earlier, infantry sometimes had their faces covered, such as with Spangenhelm helmets with eye guards.

The arrival of the Topfhelm, literally "pot helmets," likely responds to new battle tactics emerging in the High Middle Ages, and their use began to spread among cavalry. It is also suggested that the use of these helmets, which cover the wearer?s face, pushed the adoption of heraldry for knight identification?although this is a hypothesis that could fuel long debates. This version we offer here, with a flat skull, is possibly one of the earliest versions of the Topfhelm, perfectly used by both infantry and cavalry.
