In the late Middle Ages, the increasing effectiveness of offensive weapons brought the need for improved protection, and the best possible was done to close the vulnerable gaps between the armour plates. The so-called besagews or besagues of the late medieval / Gothic plate armours, although quite often very decorative, were primarily designed to protect the armpits and upper arms from high cuts and blows.
The flower-shaped, slightly concave besagews we offer here are made of 1.2 mm (18 gauge) steel.
The back of each rondel is blackened for better corrosion resistance, and equipped with a securely riveted, pre-punched leather strap for proper attachment to a plate armour, pauldrons, or a mail shirt
