Possibly as replacement of the cabassets worn under the helmet, the bascinet is one of the most common protection among cavalry and infantry from 1300 until approximately 1420. Can be seen in artistic representations, where entire troops wore this kind of protection.
Its pointed shape is specifically designed to avoid any damage in the neck by the hits. Some of this helmets where combined with coif instead of with aventail.
