This Gugel is made from sturdy canvas and is very comfortable in fit. The head part is wide-cut and has a front tie closure. It is patterned after high medieval examples.
The most distinctive feature shared by all type of gugels is that they were tailored to cover both head and shoulders. The Vikings were the first verifiably known to have worn this particular type of hood. In the High Middle Ages, it had become integral part of the commoners everyday dress and was worn by peasants, craftsmen, wayfarers and the like. The 14th century brought some alterations to the design of the gugel, which got a tighter fit and was often adorned with ornate trimmings. But by the beginning of the 16th century, it had fallen out of fashion and was seldom worn.
