Ochitsuki
is a katana that emanates elegance, and of which
TENGU
is proud. Its name refers to calm and composure. This is a katana which a seasoned and experienced samurai of the late Edo period would wield, as its style is quite appropriate for that time, although the tsuba's style is typical of the end of the era (which could mean that the koshirae on a family katana had been renewed!). The elegant contrast of colors between the ito and the saya, as well as the exquisiteness of the parts, make this a katana unlike any other on the market, as the tsuba, lightly carved in rikko style, is covered in first quality yellow/golden Japanese cotton, with hinerimaki-style braids (tsukamaki), and an elegant black same. Its fuchi and kashira, in higo style, are made of old iron, whilst the menuki represents an elegant horse's tail in bronze color. Elegantly joined to the blade, the habaki is hand-carved, with the shape of a curved arc, and with diagonal stripes which grant it personality. Obviously, the blade does the rest honor: made of 1050 steel with differential tempering and a beautiful notare-style hamon, with its Ihori-style mune, 7.6mm at the level of the habaki. It features a Chû-style kissaki, 41.5mm, with a bohi that makes this a light blade. Its elegant saya, lacquered matt brown, is crowned by a piece of rattan (a very traditional feature) in its last third, lacquered darker brown. It will withstand the rigors of the dojo or of tameshigiri perfectly. This is definitely a piece any collector or practitioner should own.
